Creating a safe culture for development: what can we learn from the Oxfam Independent Commission report?

  • Marie Stopes International (map)

Following safeguarding failures in 2018, the Oxfam Independent Commission was established. The recommendations of the Commission provide a useful contribution to GADN members’ ongoing work on safeguarding and the prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment.

At this meeting, we will build on previous GADN events and reports held since the initial revelations of safeguarding failures in 2018, where safeguarding issues have been discussed and members have shared their own organisations’ responses. This event will enable members to learn from the Independent Commission report, and to discuss the importance of interrogating the culture of power and privilege in the international development sector in order to address the underlying causes of sexual abuse and exploitation.
