Response to the 2024 G7 Leaders' Communique
June 2024
Response: In light of the ongoing rollback of women’s rights around the world and the increasing strength of anti-rights actors, the 2024 G7 Leaders’ Communique presented a regression from last year’s text, particularly concerning sexual and reproductive health and rights given the omission of reference to safe and legal abortions.
It included some positive language on gender equality and the commitment to unlock new funding for “women’s empowerment”, however, the source of this money continues to be cause for concern. There was further space for improvement in terms of fully recognising care as a human right and acknowledging its social and economic value.
GADN’s response signposts to other Ministerial Communiques where positive language on gender equality was secured earlier in the year as part of Italy’s G7 Presidency.
