The Group of 7 (G7)
The Group of 7 (G7) is a discussion forum consisting of seven of the largest world economic powers (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States) organised under a rotating presidency. In addition, the World Bank, the IMF and the European Union are represented. While the G7 only represents a handful of rich countries, it still holds significant influence on both domestic and international agendas.
Given the UK’s role in this group, GADN takes responsibility for scrutinising its work and promoting positive alternatives. We do this partly through the Women 7 (W7) group of civil society organisations, working alongside the Civil Society 7 (C7).
In 2023, Japan holds the G7 presidency and will hand it over to Italy in 2024 from where it will then go to Canada in 2025.
Women 7 (W7)
Women 7 (W7) is a group of civil society organisations from across the world that come together to promote proposals on gender equality and women’s rights to governments within the Group 7 (G7) process. Its objective is to ensure that G7 leaders adopt concrete political and financial commitments that lead to a tangible, lasting and transformative impact on women’s and girls’ lives everywhere. Its presidency rotates according to the G7 presidency.
In 2023, the Asia-Pacific Human Rights Information Centre, Japan Civil Society Network on SDGs, Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP) and Citizens Initiative for Pharmaceutical Access to Emergency Contraception (CIPATEC) are hosting the W7.
W7 2021
In 2021, in line with the UK’s G7 Presidency, GADN co-chaired the W7 together with Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS), with support from Care International UK and ActionAid UK.
