Swati Kamble
Brief Biography:
I am a researcher activist engaged in women’s mobilisation, activism and social movement research for over a decade and a half. My research focuses on human rights, social justice, and intersectionality from a decolonisation perspective. Specifically I have been drawn to understand what motivates marginalised, oppressed caste women to mobilise and fight for their rights despite the caste and patriarchal backlash they experience in their daily lives. My PhD research focused on studying the influences Dalit (formerly untouchable caste) women -who face insurmountable intersectional barriers- make on policy processes, especially navigating through andro-centric, casteist bureaucratic spaces of power. Through this research, I got exposure into how Dalit women activists as agents of change. I saw that these women systematically use their intersectional knowledge and identities to negotiate their rights. Further I also got to learn how activists and artists are using digital platforms to reiterate their narratives and how on the other hand the digital space also makes them hyper visible to state surveillance and exposes them to caste and gender-based violence. In my research, women from marginalised background try to enter new spaces (bureaucratic spaces, politics), they are new comers there and yet they bring about policy change that democratises policy.
