Gender Equality and the Global Debt Crisis

Briefing: This GADN and ActionAid UK briefing sets out how the global debt crisis is a significant issue for gender justice. Women and girls in all their diversity are disproportionately hit when high debt repayments squeeze government spending, and debt deals bring harsh austerity measures. At a time of increasing need and declining official development assistance (ODA) flows, debt reduction could free government resources for spending on gender equality across the Global South. 

With the UK taking the Presidency of the G20 in 2027, there is a timely opportunity for the extension of existing debt frameworks, with a simpler process, a more substantial offer, more countries eligible, and applying to all creditors - while acknowledging the need for longer-term, democratic solutions.
